  1. i) In the space below, organize the scores in the data set in , from smallest to largest.

  1. ii) What is the sample size in this data set?

iii) Calculate/observe the mean, median and mode for macaque birth weight. Show all of your work. (You may use a calculator).

  1. iv) Which measure would you choose when reporting the statistics for macaque birth weight? Why?

  1. v) Are there any outliers in this data set? If so, which are the outliers?

  1. There are hypotheses about variation in birth weight of infants by maternal age. To determine whether mother’s age is linked to newborn’s weight, data were collected in a population of humans in a group of older mothers and in a group of younger mothers. These data can be found in the Excel file in the first tab titled ‘2. Human birth weight’.

  1. i) What is the sample size of young mothers and the sample size of older mothers?

  1. ii) Using the Excel formulas shown in class (and provided on the Powerpoint lecture from 10/29/2020), calculate the mean, median and mode of this sample in the cells indicated on the Excel sheet. You do not have to calculate those numbers here on this Word document. The purpose here is to start getting comfortable with using Excel formulas.

iii) Based on the statistics you calculated, what can you say about any difference in newborn birth weight based on maternal age?

  1. The second tab in the Excel file titled ‘3. Exam scores’ gives the scores received by students in an exam in a biological anthropology class. The total number of points for the exam was 100.

  1. i) What is the sample size?

  1. ii) Using the Excel formulas shown in class (and provided on the Powerpoint lecture from 10/29/2020), calculate the mean, median and mode of this sample in the cells indicated on the Excel sheet.

iii) Using a 5-point interval scales (50-54, 55-59, …), calculate the frequency of scores in each interval on the Excel sheet (in the yellow highlighted columns).

  1. iv) Using the frequencies that you calculated in (iii) above, make a figure for the frequency distribution, i.e., a histogram, for these data. (You can watch this video which shows how to make a histogram in Excel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJzIx4B5b9I).

  1. v) What type of frequency distribution do your data have as shown by the histogram?
