The factors that determine the tone at the top in business ethics issues include ethical conduct, corporate culture, employee values, and the perceived importance of the company. The tone at the top is particularly important in an organization where individual employees have strong perspectives about ethical issues (Bastiaan Versteeg, 2019).
Factors of the tone at the top:
• Integrity and effort
The motivation of the top employee must be the guiding principle that can keep the bottom performing on time, on budget, and with discipline. Integrity and effort are two of the most important key factors in maintaining the proper performance of people. The employee must always act with integrity and effort to meet the expectations of the employer.
An organization should always maintain consistency with the work ethic of its top. In order to maintain its level of integrity, there must be integrity and commitment and a sense of responsibility and trust.
• The work ethic of the bottom
In maintaining its top performance, the bottom must ensure that it will be consistently engaged in the work performed by the top by performing as well as possible. All efforts should be aimed at keeping quality and efficiency of the work performed.
• The values and standards of the top employees
For maintaining good working standards of organization top, the bottom must take a lead role in maintaining those standards. There must be no attempt to impose work rules, and every effort should be aimed at maintaining the quality and efficiency of the work done.
The important factor that influences the tone at the top in business ethics is not only the quality of work and consistency, but the overall work style that the organization will promote.

The factors that determine the tone at the top in business ethics have to do with the cultural context in which the organization operates. This determines how an executive’s actions and words are interpreted. Ethical culture consists of the principles, beliefs, values, and practices held by individuals and organizational units. The culture is a reflection of a particular set of values that people hold. One can view ethical culture as a reflection of the specific organization’s history, traditions, leadership and values, which are articulated by the ethical culture and taken as a guideline for corporate decision making (Chonko, 2017).
The tone at the top in business ethics is that the firm has ethical culture, that the culture is good, and that it is relatively high in ethical leadership. These factors combine to establish a positive ethical culture. Ethical leadership has the greatest effect on a firm’s ethical culture. The ethics of individuals and organizations should be integrated in the firm’s ethical culture. A leader needs to have a positive ethical climate in order to attract and retain the best and most talented employees. Ethical leaders can communicate their ethical beliefs in ways that help create the trust necessary for them to have a fulfilling and successful leadership role. Leaders can create an environment in which employees feel comfortable sharing important personal information. They can build the capacity of the organization (Contreras, 2019).
The “tone at the top” in this respect is the norm of an organization and thus it directly influences the values of employees and other subordinates. The tone at the top in business ethics is the level of leadership as well as the company’s corporate culture and goals.
