Module 02: Reflective Reading Journal
Due: Jan 17 at 11:59pm
Calendar | BUS 503 B3 – Business Research & Writing (2020/30) | ||||
Details | As a graduate student you will be tasked with supporting your statements with research. A good rule of thumb is if it isn’t common knowledge to the common person, you must provide research to validate your statements. As you are tasked with finding numerous scholarly articles to support your work there are a variety of methods to keep track of the information.
One effective method has been to use a reflective reading journal. Reflective reading journals provide space for examining our readings and thoughts in greater detail, while following through on our observation(s) and experience(s). We utilized the reflective reading journal as a pedagogical approach to help prepare graduate students with the knowledge, values, and skills for business research and academic writing. The underlying strategy is to be reflective, allowing us to pause and critically think if we are utilizing a good source of information or alternative points of view. For this course, you will use the reflective reading journal method as you read the Goodson text. Each week you will be tasked with reading and completing your journal on the assigned chapters. In module 05, you will be tasked with writing a 5-page paper (see below for details). The paper will be supported by the information in the Goodson text and other sources. Module 05: Reflective Reading Journal Paper Review your Reflective Reading Journal, as well as other literature from the course. Your goal is to analyze, explain, and build a personal action plan. Please write a 5 page paper outlining improved awareness and self-development, what can be concluded from the experience, and ultimately build a personal action plan that outlines how you plan to continue building upon your research and academic writing skills.
Reflective Reading Journal – is comprised of selected quotes from assigned readings, and corresponding: Comments, Questions, Aha Moments (double entry style journal – see Canvas for sample journal). Each journal entry is due on or before the designated due date and full or excepted quotes must be cited per APA: (Author (s), publication date, page number) following each quote – in quotation marks. Please date the start of each assigned entry with the due date (sample journal below to utilize and assist with format – notice the references listed at the bottom of the journal). Assignment Requirements: In terms of this assigned reading – Chapters 1, 2, and 3 from the Goodson text and also research a scholarly journal article outlining the benefits from obtaining an advanced business degree. We must have two full pages of journal entries from Goodson and one full page of journal entries from the journal article. Second (#2) Module 02: Journal Article Critique #1
Journal Articles: A great practice when reading journal articles is to search for the purpose of the study, its findings, and determine how the findings can be applied in the research being conducting. For this assignment, students will select a business topic (Examples: leadership, retention, job satisfaction, absenteeism, succession planning) of their choice and complete a journal article critique. See the link below for an example. Sample Journal Article Critique Requirements: · The article must be scholarly and peer-reviewed from Welder Library E-resources. · The article must have a qualitative or quantitative study and include a methodology, findings, and discussion section. · The article must be no more than 10 years old- meaning students should search for articles in the 2010- 2020 time frame. The Journal Article Critique must include your response to the following questions: · What was the purpose of this research study? Is the study qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods? For the purposes of this assignment, you don’t want to critique a review of literature or a meta-analysis. · What were the findings of this research study? · How can the findings of this research study be applied? Explain in detail. Journal Article Critique should be: · A minimum of 1.5 pages, 3 pages max in length. · Double-spaced with 1” margins, 12-point Times New Roman font · Include a Title Page · Well written and organized in APA 7th edition format · Make sure to use Grammarly to check your work for errors and make corrections, prior to submitting your work. · Your submission will go through turnitin and your results should be 25% or less.
Third (#3) Module 02: Journal Articles and Research Tips Due: Jan 15 at 11:59pm
#2. Boolean Operators: Using Welder Library Eresources find 2 scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles within the last 10 years (2010- 2020) on time management. One article must include a qualitative study and one article must include a qualitative study (Review pages 4 and 5 in the APA manual). Prior to researching, review the video below on Boolean Logic. Make sure to use Boolean logic in your search. Searching Effectively Boolean Operators (Links to an external site.) Address the following bullet point items.
For each article your found, provide a brief ( 1 paragraph) summary. The summary must be in your own words. Include the purpose of the study, type of study, the number of participants, and the findings. For full credit, include a properly formatted (APA 7th edition) reference for the articles you selected. #3. Google Scholar: For most assignments in the graduate program, students will be tasked with using research from Welder Library Eresouces or Google Scholar to support their work. The majority of the articles will be expected to come from the last 10 years, unless historical information is needed. Keep in mind, often times articles found in Google Scholar have a fee associated with them. Some students will avoid Google Scholar for this reason, however, students can always request the articles found in Google Scholar from the Welder library staff. If the Welder library staff is able to find the article, there is no charge. Requests are typically completed within 24-48 hours. Review the videos below ( 5:09 and 5:51). Google Scholar Tutorial: Google Certified Educator Level 2 (Links to an external site.) How to do a literature review using Google Scholar (Links to an external site.) After reviewing the videos above, spend time looking for articles in Google Scholar. Keep in mind you will need to narrow your search to only use peer reviewed journal articles. What features did you find helpful? Would your preference be to use Google Scholar or Welder Library Eresources? Why? In addition, look for the following article in Google Scholar: Raziq, A., & Maulabakhsh, R. (2015). Impact of working environment on job satisfaction. Procedia Economics and Finance, 23, 717-725.
