Answer the Following:

Describe the job you want to discuss.

Find a formal description of your chosen job on the internet.

· Career Explorer.com is a useful site.

· Then, discuss your source’s job description (this can be in block quotes but you must provide the citation)

· Provide the link to that source after your answer.

Why did you choose this job?

Provide two reasons and use at least 1-2 sentences.

Why do you think you would be good at this job?

Provide two reasons and use at least 1-2 sentences.

To answer the remaining questions, reference the chapter titled Capitalism and the Economy from our class textbook. You can also lookup terms to define in the book’s index.

Describe emotional labor (or emotion work) as it is in our textbook.

Make sure to cite.

Do you think your chosen job will require you to perform emotional labor as it’s described in the class text?

Provide two reasons and use at least 1-2 sentences.

Describe automation as it is in our textbook.

Make sure to cite.

In the near future, do you think your chosen job could be vulnerable to automation as it’s described in the class text?

Why do you think your chosen job will, or will not, be vulnerable to automation in the near future? Provide two reasons and use at least 1-2 sentences.

In the near future, do you think your chosen job will be vulnerable to outsourcing (i.e. the relocation of production and service jobs to developing countries that charge a fraction of what it costs to pay wages in the U.S.)?

Why do you think your chosen job will, or will not, be vulnerable to outsourcing in the near future?

Provide two reasons and use 1 to 2 sentences.

Do you think your chosen job is considered gig work (i.e. a job where one works for a company as an independent contractor rather than a formal employee) or a traditional employee position?

Provide two reasons and use at least 1-2 sentences.

Recall from the textbook that gig jobs are also characterized as having sporadic incomes because employers are not required to pay independent contractors when there is no work. For instance, an Uber driver does not receive payment while waiting in their car between transporting riders. Also, consider that gig workers do not receive employee benefits like health insurance or retirement plans. However, generally, they do have more options for choosing their own schedules compared to traditional full-time employees.

Assignment #3: Essay Example

After attending truck driving school and graduating with my commercial driver’s license I plan to become a professional truck driver and transport cargo across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The Career Explorer website defines a truck driver as “someone who earns a living driving a truck, transporting goods and materials over land. They typically go to and from retail and distribution centers or manufacturing plants, working any hours of the day or night. They provide an essential service to industrialized societies. While trucking isn’t a great career choice for everyone, for some it can be a fantastic way to work and live. In to really enjoy the job, however, you have to enjoy the ‘lifestyle’ of living on the road, as trucking is really more of a lifestyle than it is a typical job” (careerexplorer.com 2018).

One reason I chose long-distance truck driving is related to my strong desire to learn how to operate complex machinery. Additionally, I want to earn money for traveling around the United States. I believe I would excel as an 18-wheel truck driver because I have a track record of seeking out and mastering unconventional skills. For instance, as a teenager, I learned how to play the guitar even though I had no musical background. I also think I would be good at this job because long-distance driving requires adherence to strict schedules and I have always been very good at meeting deadlines.

The class textbook defines emotion work as __________ (Conley Date:page#). I do not anticipate that working as a truck driver will require me to perform emotional labor. First, I think this will be the case because long-distance driving entails going for extended periods without interacting with customers or supervisors. Second, I doubt this job will include emotional labor because unlike other types of service workers, such as waiters or customer service representatives, being an 18-wheeler driver is not a job where employees are heavily evaluated on their ability to act pleasantly towards customers.

The class textbook defines automation as __________ (Conley Date:page#). I think truck driving is vulnerable to automation because after doing some research I have learned that a) Texas legislators have allowed autonomous driving since 2017 and self-driving trucks already transport cargo from Dallas to Houston on a regular basis, and b) because many companies are dedicating a lot of money to the research and development of autonomous automobiles (Business Insider 2018).

I think long-distance truck driving is a job that is not very susceptible to outsourcing. In my opinion, one reason truck driving will not be terribly vulnerable to outsourcing is that land delivery is confined to certain physical continents. By default, it would be very difficult for workers in most other countries to drive trucks in the U.S. because they would need to immigrate and live in the U.S. or a neighboring country. However, I do think there is a stronger possibility that American truck driving companies could hire workers from land neighbor countries like Canada or Mexico if they had the opportunity to pay these workers lower wages than Americans.

I think that long-distance truck driving can belong to both the gig economy category and the traditional employee category. For example, if a truck driver owns their own equipment and goes to work for transportation companies based on independently contracted runs, then, that truck driving job falls in the gig economy job category “where employment is more fluid” compared to the traditional job category (Author Year:page#). However, if a truck driver does not own their own equipment and sells only their skills as a commercial truck driver to a company – and they receive insurance and other benefits, and their schedules are mostly controlled by the company – then, that truck driving job falls into the traditional employee category “where the job infrastructure is the responsibility of the company” rather than the workers (Author Year:page#).
