With the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 (Links to an external site.), the United States government formally apologized and provided reparations to Japanese-Americans for their internment during World War II. That Act was partially motivated by a desire to “make more credible and sincere any declaration of concern by the United States over violations of human rights committed by other nations.” Do you believe the US has put itself in a credible position from which to criticize the human rights practices of other nations? If yes, what crucial changes do you believe the US has made? If not, what is an example of a more recent decision or action by the US government that undermines credibility?
