Data In contemporary society

Assignment 1: Working with Data In contemporary society we are surrounded by data every day. In order to be a well-informed member of the community it’s important for you to be able to read and interpret graphical information to understand the basics of how data is collected where it comes from and whether it is accurate. For your first assignment 4. Now address the questions below and provide a profile of your home town: a. Describe some of the interesting characteristics of your hometown. How do these characteristics compare with national averages? Discuss at least two facts that you learned about your community that you found surprising or interesting. b. Now search for similar information for a town near yours that you suspect may have different characteristics. Or you might compare with the town in which you live now. Were your expectations of similarities or differences between your hometown and this other community confirmed? In what ways were they or were they not? c. Now based on what you have found out in this assignment create a community profile for your home town. Below are some examples of it: Darien CT: Darien is a small town populated by very wealthy citizens who lead opulent lifestyles. A significant portion are business executives with salaries in excess of $200000 while others are successful small-business owners. Citizens are predominantly white late-middle aged and married with children but there are significant numbers of Asians young families and active seniors. Birmingham AL: A large majority of Birmingham’s citizens are African-American and virtually all of its citizens are either African-American or white—no other racial group makes up even one percent of the population. Additionally less than 2 % of citizens identify as Hispanic compared to the national average of about 12 %. Inner-city residents include many young working-class singles and families; college students; and retired blue-collar seniors. The outer rings of the city and its suburbs are home to more middle-aged and middle-class professionals.
