Part 1: Mini-Lesson Plan

Grade Level: Grade 6

ELA Standards: The common standards in the lesson plan are:
1. Reading
2. Writing
3. Listening and speaking
4. Differentiation for all the students

Learning Objectives:

The objectives of the lesson are to:
a. Equip the learners with the necessary reading skills. At the end of the lesson, they are expected to read voluminous works
b. Equip the learners with the relevant writing skills including the use of simple punctuation marks like full stops and commas. The students should also write letters and words clearly
c. Develop good listening skills. The learners, after the completion of the lesson, will be required to actively listen to the instructor, their friends, and different groups. Their listening skills shall be evaluated.
d. Enable the learners to be fluent speakers. At the end of the lesson, they should be able to pronounce words, be able to control their body movement during the speech, and observe the punctuation when speaking.
e. Serve the specific needs of every student. With some students gifted while others being slow learners, the lesson will aim to address the entire needs of the learners

Description of the unit the class is currently learning:

The class is currently learning a unit on components of the morning meeting. Under this unit, the learners are taught the different components of morning meeting which includes greetings, share, morning message, and activity. When the learners meet in the morning for classes, they must greet each other.

The book that can be used to create ELA learning activity:

The Essentials of Instruction Design by Abbie Brown and Timothy D. Green. The book highlights the various process, foundations, and principles upon which instructors can design their lessons. It is designed majorly for graduate students and does not specify any model for designing learning activities

Instructional Strategies:

The instructional strategies for the lesson will include:
1. Independent student practice – The learners will be provided with various practices on the various ELA standards and will be required to complete them within the allocated time. Some of the practices will include reading and writing and the instructor will monitor all the activities
2. Reflection – The learners will be required to speak to each other about what they have learned. The instructor will also ask the learners what new concepts they will have learned.
3. Visualization – Visual elements such as gaming and the use of leaderboards shall be used to aid in the learning process.

ELA Learning Activity Description:

1. Reading sessions – The learners will be provided with reading sections to enhance their reading skills. Reading books will be given to each learner
2. Problem-solving – The learners will be given different tasks with problems to be solved. Among the tasks will be filling the missing letters and correctly punctuating sentences, phrases and words
3. Critical thinking – The class will also focus on critical thinking. The learners will be required to think critically in some activities that will be provided both as homework and as classwork.
4. Interactive learning- The learners will work in groups with their friends to deliver on certain work in the classroom. Among activities that will engage interactive learning is listening and speaking.

Assessment (to be created and administered in Clinical Field Experience D):

The learners will be assessed using:
1. Reflection – They will be required to reflect on what they have learned after every core standard
2. Formative tests –After learning every core standard, the learners will undertake a formative test to measure their progress
3. Summative tests – At the end of the entire lesson, the students will have to undertake a test to determine their entire progress.

Part 2: Implementation Process

The implementation process of the lesson plan will involve differentiation of students based on their abilities in classes. The differentiation is not intended to dehumanize the poor performers but to provide them with a real opportunity to achieve their academic progress. The lesson plan implementation process acknowledges the existence of students with different needs and will seek to establish a balance between them. The class consists of gifted learners, learners with disabilities in reading and writing, and learners with autism. As a way of meeting all their needs, the lesson plan will incorporate individual specific activities. Besides differentiation, the instructor shall respond to all the questions raised by the learners while on the other hand, the learners will have to deliver feedback on all the assigned tasks.

Part 3: Reflection

One of the strengths of the lesson plan is that it contains the key standards for learners at Grade six. The core standards are listening, speaking, reading and writing, and differentiation. During the teaching and the learning process, the learners will be able to achieve holistic academic growth as a result.
Additionally, the other strength of the lesson plan is that it uses diverse and updated instructional strategies to teach the learners at grade six. Among the modern tools in education are technological equipment such as computers, laptops, and smartphones that are used for teaching and learning. Under the instructional strategies, one of the methods that shall be used in teaching and learning is visualization. The learners shall be introduced to gaming activities such as playing with computers to enhance their retention of the key components. Reflection, which is increasingly becoming more useful in education, shall be used in the learning process. The learners shall be required to tell their friends and the instructor about what they will have learned. Moreover, the lesson plan includes homework that shall be done by learners. That is a strength in the lesson plan because it allows parents to participate in the education of their children. Consequently, the lesson plan will create a collaborative environment between the parents, the teachers, and the learners. The last strength of the lesson plan is that it provides an opportunity for the instructor to continuously assess the learners through summative and formative assessments. These forms of evaluation will help the instructor to keep track of every student’s needs and address the needs of learners at every instance of the learning process.
While the lesson plan encompasses all these strengths, some areas can be improved. Among the areas that can be improved is developing entirely distinct approaches for teaching students with different needs. For instance, the gifted learners can be subjected to a completely different teaching method to address their specific needs just like should be for the students with disabilities in reading and writing. The implementation that can be required during testing of the lesson plan is the use of different questions to evaluate a student with diverse needs. Gifted students should be able to solve difficult questions compared to struggling students. The findings of this approach will be used in developing future lesson plans in my profession. That is because, from the implementation results, I will better understand the different needs of learners.
