Select an exhibition from the 20th century and write about it. You must select a curated group exhibition which was organized by a curator or curatorial collective and featured more than three artists. The exhibition could have taken place anywhere in the world but must showcase works of art that are classified under one of the art movements discussed in this course. If it was a travelling exhibition you are encouraged to focus on a singular iteration or justify your reading of the broader project in your writing. For example Artario ’72 was developed specifically as a touring exhibition by the Art Council of Ontario to promote contemporary art in Canada which would make this exhibition especially rich for a national lens versus a local one. If an exhibition is thematically focused on an activist issue or artistic movement be sure to make reference to cultural or political context(s) associated with it. For example if reviewing the Glenbow Museum’s The Spirit Sings: Artistic Traditions of Canada’s First Peoples you are encouraged to research Indigenous critiques and protests against the museum’s partnership with Shell Oil Canada. Your review must include the following: Details of the exhibition including the institution title name of curator(s) and dates. A brief description of the exhibition layout and works on display. If you have selected a large multi-exhibition biennial focus on areas or works that are central to your analysis. Introduce the thesis or objectives pursued by the curator(s) and by the end analyze if their curatorial strategies were successful in achieving them. Your reflection of the exhibition. What works or curatorial arguments have aged well and remain relevant today? How did the exhibition respond to its slated claims and where in your opinion were its weak points? Why or why not is this exhibition significant for the study of art history in the 20th century? In other words how was this exhibition reminiscent of its temporal and cultural context and why should we continue to study it? To conduct your research you are encouraged to visit museum and gallery websites to study their exhibition history as well as use books articles and reviews to find coverage of past exhibitions. The review should be between 1000-1250 words and follow writing guidelines outlined in the syllabus. You must have at least four citations one of which must come from the required or recommended reading list. Any exceptions will have to discussed and approved via email. All students have the option to discuss their exhibition topic theoretical focus and bibliography with me at least one week in advance.
