Observe and respond to your classmates’ posts as you comment on the works you have chosen. Remember how they fit into the period, how they contrast life in the South with Northern urban life, what views they demonstrate, and how they would be received today. Response should be at least 1 paragraph per post. At least one citation per response. You may use different citations in each post if needed.

Post 1 – Natasha S

A work to be discussed is the “Scottsboro boys.”  (Hughes,1931) It fit into the period because blacks continued to be falsely accused of assaults on white women.  The contrast between the South and Northern urban life is in the South these boys would have been lynched, in the North they had a trial.  The views demonstrated was these boys were falsely accused. They would be received today, the same as back then.  There are many cases where black men have been accused of rape only to be later acquitted.

Another work is Langston Hughes’, “The Ballad of Booker T.”   It fit into the period because it told of how Booker T. Washington tried to empower Black people to get an education and help each other. He built a school to educate Blacks.  It is a contrast to life in the South because all attempts to build schools and educate Blacks were thwarted in numerous ways.  In the North, Blacks were encouraged to educate their children. The view was education is important, “train your head, your heart, and your hand.” To help yourself and your fellowman.” (Hughes,1941) I think this would be positively received today.  We all need to help each other, so that we can create a better world.

Harlem Renaissance As New York City became a destination for black migrants before, during, and after World War I, most of them settled in Harlem—a large neighborhood in the northern portion of Manhattan Island—which by the 1920s became a center of African American cultural activities including literature, art, and music. (1)

The Harmon Foundation–Providing Wings for the Artists- The Harmon Foundation set up by William Harmon help to maintain the artistry of the Harlem Renaissance by recognizing and supporting the works of African American artists. In 1925 the foundation began presenting cash awards to blacks for distinguished achievements in eight fields: business, education, fine arts, literature, music, race relations, religious service, and science. (2) This was a different way of life from the South where artists were not recognized for their skills because of their race. Marian Anderson–World-Famous Contralto gained her fame from European performing. She came back to the United States when opportunities for her special voice came to light. The color of her skin kept her from performing at Constitutional Hall in Washington D.C. hearing of this action Mrs. Roosevelt set her up in front of the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd of  75,000 to sing the Star-Spangled Banner.  The self-portrait of African American life, identity, and culture that emerged from Harlem was transmitted to the world at large, challenging the racist and disparaging stereotypes of the Jim Crow South.
