Guidelines of Writing the Term Paper

1. Selection of Paper Topic:
a. You may pick up any topics you like from the related issues relevant to the

course materials in the course or from your discussion on Assignment 1
b. The topic may be based major economic issues/challenges faced by

you’re your country/countries of selection in the process of economic
growth and development or economic transformation, if any. The contents
of your paper are expected to include economic, social and socio-
economic aspects in your locality, region, country or global level
depending on your scope and limitation of the topic materials you will
choose from

c. If you like, please feel free to send me a topic with a single paragraph of
stating the main issues you like to write about and I will review it with a
feedback to you

2. The Format of the paper will be as follows:

a. The title of the paper must be relevant to your topic and materials you will

analyze and it must be very precise and relevant to development issues
b. The abstract should be followed by the Title
c. List of Contents would be the next, then do the following sequence
d. Introduction Chapter 1
e. Literature Review Chapter 2
f. Methods of discussion and sources of data, if any Chapter 3
g. The main Analysis Chapter 4
h. Results and conclusion: policy implications/recommendations Chapter 5
i. List of references
j. Attachment of tables, data, and/or any statistical information

3. The expectation: High quality paper with analytical reasoning and integrated

approach is expected. You need to make a reasonable contribution in the paper in
relating to the subject area. Integration means to make consistent analysis of
relevant and appropriate use of economic and social variables needed for the
theoretical models to be used in the term paper.

4. Writing Style: The following general style as guided by APA(www.apa.org)

a. Font size 12, Time New Roman, normal (not bold), double spaced, the
first line of each paragraph of the paper must be indented to the right by 1
inch on the ruler, and no bold or italic except some quotation or
highlighting certain important points or referenced comments by someone
else.

b. Not to copy any one’s writing, except quoting with appropriate reference
with parenthesis. Paraphrasing is fine with caution to reflect your own
interpretation.

c. Will explain in the class how to write the list of references
d. Avoid writing: I, we, you, me, us, ours, etc.
e. Header of each page on the right corner should highlight the core subject

of your paper and your name

5. The Length of the paper: The main writing of the paper should be between 7 and
10 pages with no upper limit. It does not include the introduction and abstract,
topic on the top, and the list of contents and list of references.
