How age and occupation affected the Labour market in 1920

So, for this paper please focus on the topics of occupation and age based on the maps that are given (attachments). These maps are the base of the paper, in where the conclusions should be derived from.

The sources should be on the history of st Catherine’s, Ontario and Canada in the early 20th century to contextualize the research done using the maps.

The main idea for this paper is to use the maps and make conclusions based off them. I want to focus on the labour market in St Catherine’s 1920 and how the occupations and age of these people in st Catherine’s contribute to it. I have referred which maps are to be use for each topic below.

For each of the topics, the conclusions I would like you to follow are:

For occupation: Refer to maps labelled 2- mechanic, 3-labour, 4- machinist (on the map the dots represent: labour = blue, machinist = orange, and mechanic = purple)

  • There is labour, machinists, and mechanics (each have their own map displaying their spatial distribution)
  • Base a conclusion about the labour market in 1920 and why they cluster in this specific area
  • Conclusion can be based around the idea of how people have shifted from living in the country to the urban area, due to introduction of new innovation and machines. Whereas these 3 occupations were in the top 5 of most common jobs.
  • Most of these people with these occupations are clustered together where there are factories, car shops, plants, city gas works etc. (have a look at the map to see this through)

For Age: Refer to map labelled “occupation and age”

  • The map given is a combination of age and occupations together
  • For the range of age, there is legends located at the bottom of the map – this displays the size of the dot in terms of what age range they reside in)
  • Labour is generally widespread, in age
  • Mechanic range is from 20-55
  • Machinists range from 26-49
  • The Conclusion can be based around the idea on how less seniors worked, and more young folks reside in the urban areas, aka the city life as we know, due to the intro of new innovations – how this adds to the labor market in 1920 st Catherine’s
