High-concept abilities VS Entry-level L-Directed skills

In the “High concept high touch”, Pink claims that “The high-concept abilities of an artist are often more valuable than the easily replicated L-Directed skills of an entry-level business graduate.” The claim implies that having the ability to do something that overseas knowledge workers cannot do cheaper, or powerful computers cannot do faster and that satisfies the non-material desires of an abundant age is valuable than simply having basic skills from school. The high-concept ability is to create aesthetic beauty. Why is the artistic and emotional element considered important? Pink points out that in the past, products manufactured by companies were valued by price and quality, but now, it is becoming highly competitive for companies to impose artistic beauty on the products. It seems to be true that the high-concept abilities of an artist are increasingly important, and this aesthetic ability is considered more valuable than the basic L-directed skills of graduates who have just received a bachelor’s degree.

For that reason, L-directed skills of fresh college graduates were valued because their business mind enabled the efficient production for companies, but this approach is lagging behind in modern society. There are many companies that are newly established with new and innovative products and services throughout the world. Existing companies must continue to change and develop in not to lose consumer’s attention to new companies. Creativity is the key point in maintaining their competitiveness.
High-concept abilities are far more competitive in the job market than the basic skills of college graduates because the development of technology has enabled computers to replace most of human abilities. In particular, the basic abilities of graduates who have just graduated from college can be easily replaced by computer programs. For example, it is much cheaper to use an accounting program than to hire a fresh graduate of a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and the probability of errors is much lower. Computers can do simple calculations much faster than humans without making mistakes, but they do not have the ability to create new things. Thus, the high-concept abilities that computers cannot replace are valued more than basic L-directed skills of fresh college graduates.
