  OVERVIEW

  This is the second individual mission for you to complete in Project Ares. This is a required assignment with a pass/fail grade. To pass this assignment, you need to complete the mission and submit a screenshot from your completed mission using the Project Ares Mission Assignment Template [DOCX]. See the Mission Screenshot Examples [PDF] for an example of how your screenshot should look. An overview of the mission information is provided below. You will have access to detailed mission information when you log in to Project Ares.Your assignment next week will be to submit a report for this mission to mid-level leadership. For example, direct reports presenting to the Chief Information Security Officer. Take notes while completing this mission to use in your report for next week’s assignment.   Difficulty Level: MediumIdentify and remove malware responsible for identity theft and protect the network from further infections. Variability in play within the mission includes method of exfiltration, malicious DNS and IP addresses, infected machines, data collection with file share uploads that vary, method of payload and persistence, and a mix of Windows and Linux.Knowledge Required (Mission Core Competencies—Note: These are Project Ares’s competencies. Be sure not to confuse them with this course’s Course Competencies, which are listed in each assignment.):

  • Intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/PS) using Snort.
    • DNS/IP/hash blocking.
    • BNS/IP connectivity alerts.
  • Basic malware analysis.
  • Snort rule development.
  • Containment and eradication.

  Mission Objectives/Tasks:

  1. Use IDS/IPS to block the initial malware infection vectors.
  2. Prevent the download of malicious executables.
  3. Create an alert for the infections.
  4. Remove malware from the initially infected machine.
  5. Find and remove any other instances of malware.
  6. Prevent further infection.
