Principles of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) are based on a variety of theories and studies that range from the self-fulfilling prophecy to understanding meta-cognition. It is our stories and narratives that provide meaning about our experiences. What is clear and common to all principles is that when people reflect upon and share successful experiences, they relive those experiences, form connections with others, and acknowledge how they co-contribute to the organization. Using the framework of AI moves the dialogue from asking what is wrong with the organization to what is working well and how we can continue to experience the best in our organization.  AI focuses on participation and collaboration, and it enhances confidence and learning.

When applied to evaluation, AI brings out the positive contributions of each member within the organization. Through this approach we can change our inner dialogue to one of constructing our world into what it can become; AI is future-oriented. We can now look to where we would want to work, and how we can continue to build on our own successes and with those of others within the organization. And as you know, intrinsic motivation encourages people to act and change. So, when using positive images we can create those desired futures for nursing!

In Module 6 activities, we will continue our dialogue with peers and have critical conversations related to promoting excellence in the work environment. We will also continue to bring forward your personal and professional accomplishments and achievements that demonstrate how you applied leadership principles to advocate for the unique role of the nursing profession within the healthcare system (EPSLO 5). Formulate decisions based on nursing judgment and collaboration with the inter-professional team to achieve quality patient outcomes (EPSLO 3). These discussions will be presented within the context of transforming teams and practices into healthy, productive work environments where excellence thrives.
