Narrative Descriptive essay Assignment

Narrative Descriptive essay Assignment
Description
First, find a photograph of yourself and some family or friends at some type of event–a holiday gathering, a vacation trip, a festival, a work project, a dinner party, a shopping expedition, a ceremony of some sort. Plan on looking at several photographs to find one that shows an event you can write about. Print it out and plan on submitting it along with your paper if you have the tech to do so.
Second, using the photograph, remember everything about that day. Brainstorm–jotting down as many ideas about that day as possible. What story comes to mind because of that photo? What is the of events? Does the photo document the end of the story, a midway point, or a beginning? Why did you document that event? You can write about details revealed by the photo but also write about details not revealed by the photo. (The purpose of the photo is to to trigger your memories; it is not itself the subject of your essay and you should not describe it or reference it directly in the essay. The events connected to the photo will make up the content of the essay.) What made that day/event special? Can you make a claim about that that is relevant to many people? Do you have any insights about the value of that day? Can you make a claim about that that is relevant?
Third, plan the basic structure of the essay and draft it, using the event in the photo in the narrative. Make a claim about the human condition, which you extrapolate or derive from your own experience. That becomes your thesis.
For example , say I have a photograph of myself and my son in the car on the way to Costco. He sometimes takes photos while we’re driving somewhere. I know the photo is from that particular day, but nothing in the photo says Costco. It is the inside of my car. The photo, however, triggers memories connected with that day, all of which I write down. Some memories will be useless, but some may help me start thinking about a point I want to make about relationships. I could make a claim that shopping at a big box store is a middle-class consumer way-of-life that many people deride, but it is also a fun bonding experience. Then I would explain how my son and I talk on the way to the store, work together to find the best deals, joke around, try the food, find the shortest checkout, and talk on the way home about our successes. I could include many specific descriptions about my son or the environment in the store. (Shopping at Costco is off the table as a topic as is this claim. Get your own photo!)
Notice, the claim is not, “my son and I have fun shopping at Costco.” Rather, it is a more universal claim that is true of many people (shopping at a big box store can be a fun bonding experience) that my narrative about my son and me demonstrates. This is a point to understand about college writing. We are not just little self-absorbed children; we are representative of lots of people, and we write about that, but at the same time, we can use ourselves and our experiences to derive those universal truths and as examples of those universal truths.
Include both a narrative in chronological and descriptive details, many of which may not be shown in the photo (you remembered them). I would describe different parts of Costco or other shoppers, none of which obviously are not revealed by my photo. As to the narrative part, I’d have driving over, being in the store, checking out, and driving home. I would not include every little detail. That we walk from the car to the store is kind of a given, so I’d omit that, and focus on the parts that matter. All of this you have to figure out for your narrative.
Brainstorm on a few topics to see which one yields the most interesting material for an essay. Figure out a logical –most likely chronological, for the various points you want to make. Consider what your thesis (main point) will be ; you have to make some kind of universal claim that readers will recognize as true about human beings or human relationships. Develop each body paragraph around a point in the story. Do not just write a narrative–that is not the assignment. This has to be an essay–so essay structure matters. You need an introductory paragraph, with all the necessary elements, body paragraphs that begin with topic sentences and move through the most meaningful parts of the narrative, and a conclusion. Once you’ve drafted the essay, revise it, making sure you have included everything your reader will need to understand your claim and discussion. Edit every word, sentence, and paragraph for correctness. Proofread.
