Hi everyone! Welcome to our Discussion Board! Well be using this space to explore in further depth some of the central concepts questions and current concerns examined in our course materials throughout the semester. As noted in the syllabus please feel free to make this space your own – Ill always post a series of prompts but please feel free to chime in on anything that has caught your attention presented questions or otherwise speaks to your particular interests. As a reminder this space is meant to serve as a relatively informal space not unlike a face-to-face discussion in the classroom. These are not meant to serve as tests or quizzes but should instead be taken as low-stakes spaces for thinking out loud together. Lets have fun! The parameters are simple: Everyone is welcome to provide stand-alone responses or to engage in threaded discussions amongst each another – or both! The choice is yours! Folks should make sure to thoughtfully contribute to each of the ten discussion boards as they become available throughout the semester and commit to remaining respectful and focused on relevant course materials. Without further ado… Lets start with some basic (seemingly deceptive??) considerations: What is science? What if anything makes science different from other ways of exploring and understanding the world? Is science political? That is do politics and science interact with each other? Should they? Why? Why not? What does the term social construction seem to imply? What might it mean to say that something is socially constructed? Can we think of examples? What might it mean to say that science technology and/or medicine are socially constructed??? Isnt a fact just well a fact?! Please note that Im using the term science here as a broad umbrella term – STEM(M) (Science Technology Engineering Math & Medicine) could work in these questions as well so please feel free to approach these and similar questions with any or all of the components of STEM in mind. That should be more than enough to keep our wheels turning this week! Requirements: Discussion Board
