Developing Organizations and Leaders

Scope: L200 is a lesson that focuses on how Sergeants Majors assist in the development of organizations and leaders. This lesson will use Army doctrine to help students gain a better understanding of the complexity of challenges and issues they will face as Sergeants Major. The purpose of this lesson is to show students that as they grow in seniority, they will confront situations and challenges they never faced or even considered. Their areas of responsibility and spheres of influence will multiply exponentially. The levels of complexity will seem overwhelming at times, and they will either adapt to this new environment or fall to the wayside. L200 will help them along this new path by introducing them to the doctrine, competencies, and behaviors Sergeants Majors and other senior leaders use to successfully develop leaders and organizations. Their future success will depend upon a number of factors to include: taking previous leadership experiences and putting them into the context of these new challenges to identify strengths and flaws in their behavior; garnering the lessons of others through study, discussion, and personal feedback; identifying the leader competencies and behaviors necessary for their continued development; and packaging it all into a learning strategy to achieve their goals as a Sergeants Major.

As a result of this lesson, students should have a better understanding of the issues a Sergeants Major will face as an organizational level leader and the multifaceted role they play in developing organizations and leaders. Most students understand leadership at the tactical level because of the context in which they operate (direct control over Soldiers, defined missions, and clearly articulated guidance). What they will struggle with, however, is how they must adjust their thinking and behavior in response to the changing environment of becoming an organizational level leader (greater complexity, less direct control, larger span of influence, etc.).
