Feel free to quote, but don’t quote too much or you’ll waste precious words. Active voice is shorter than passive voice. Avoid throat-clearing, wordy phrases (“when it comes to” or “the fact that”), and starting a sentence with “there is” or the undefined “it.” Unbury your verbs. Say “near” not “in proximity to.” Say “violates” not “in violation of.”
