THIS IS MY ANSWER TO THE PROFESSOR AND THE STUDENT LYDIA KELLY RESPONDED TO MY CLASS RESPONSE. SO PLEASE ANSWER HER REPLY BACK

MY CLASS RESPONSE TO PROFESSOR I feel that shaming is a useful tool in reintegration program. I feel that if the offender is
caused to feel bad about the act publicly in an effective manor than this should be used. Should
the person carries the stigma of the shaming after that I do not believe they should, once they have
remorseful the offender should be accepted back into society this is what is reintegration
shaming. Stigmatic shaming keeps the offender out of society for the remainder of their life with
no hope of reintegration.
When it comes to John Braithwaite’s theory of reintegrative shaming what he did was
look at both stigmatization and reintegration shaming where he examined the difference between
these two. He saw that reintegration shaming will help to reduce crime versus the stigmatization
may encourage or increase future. Braithwaite felt that a person that committed a certain act
should be therefore shamed by their society for the act that was committed and after that bring
the person back to their society without them having to have a label such as a criminal or not
normal (Braithwaite, 1989). The offender should receive encouragement by their society to make
up for what they have done and be remorseful for the behavior learn from it than move on
(Braithwaite, 1989)

STUDENT #1Lydia Kelly ANSWER THIS QESTION AGAINST MY RESPONSE UP ABOVE

One of the problems I can see with shaming punishments is the mental health aspect it could cause to the offender, but also how does society forget and not treat that person differently? For instance, Jim has committed theft, he was caught and sentenced to shame reintegration. The judge has Jim stand outside the store he took items from holding a sign. Jim completes that task, comes back to society and we are supposed to move on. However, Jim walks into that specific store or any store in his town and people watch him closer, some stores have security trained to follow him when he enters the store. Situation like that I feel would happen often. I do not think that is ok either. How do you fix that?

Honestly using the shaming tactic is not useful to me. It kind of dehumanizes offenders. I mean if those looking down have not made a mistake, or better yet have not gotten caught making those mistakes I would like to hear from them. “There must be a genuine consequence to aberrant and/or illegal behavior if the learning mechanisms are to take place.” The offender being in prison for a certain amount of time and being put on community supervision is not punishment enough. I agree with Cullen and Agnes “Restorative justice programs seek to restore and heal the victim, repair the damage to the community, and reintegrate offenders after they have made their commitment to the victim.” I believe that assisting the offender with as much support as possible will make for a better outcome than shaming them for a certain period.

Is shaming a useful tool in reintegration programs? Why or why not? Support your argument with professional experience and theories (e.g., Braithwaite’s reintegrative shaming theory) from this week’s Learning Resources.
Let me address John Braithwaite’s theory of re-integrative shaming, Braithwaithe looked at the stigmatization portion and re-integration shamin where he looked at the differences of the two. Braithwaithefelt that re-integration shaming would possibly reduce crime and stigmatization would very well encourage future crimes by the person. Braithwaithe theory saw shaming as a way to embarrass a person in public to the point they would feel bad about their actions and never wanted to commit the crime again and be remorseful for their actions.

Now let’s address my opinion I think in some cases shaming would work especially if they were made to be on Display in the community they lived in and they aren’t “career criminals”. Example of this a Judge I’ve known for years who became a Congressman and represented the 2nd Congressional District in Texas and the would-be Ted “Judge” Poe. Judge’s approach was simple and unorthodox: He would sentence shoplifters to hold a sign in public confessing their theft or arrange for abusive spouses to apologize on the courthouse steps. “He always wanted them to know there was a victim at the other end of their actions,” said Elaine Stolte, who worked for Poe for nearly two decades while he was on the bench. In one case, he ed a car thief, who stole and wrecked an elderly woman’s car, to lend her his souped-up Pontiac until her car was back from the shop. “She called me the next day and said she never had so much fun driving this Trans Am around Houston, ” Poe said. This process would work in my opinion but not sure it would work for the hardened criminal as I previously stated, it might just cause resentment towards the legal system but if you catch the first time/problem offenders it could work some places have prisoners cleaning the highways as part of their punishment or painting over graffiti.
