Scientist can use telescopes to look at stars billions of light years away. Using the ‘images’ they gather from stars and planets, scientists are able to determine the size, temperature and mass of the star or planet. Also, they can determine the chemical composition, specifically if there is water and organic (carbon-based) materials. The technology required to do this goes well beyond your typical Wal-Mart telescope. Scientists don’t just use telescopes like we are used to, those based on visible light, they also use ‘telescopes’ that use other forms of light. Some notable examples are x-ray and radio-wave telescopes.
For this paper, I want you to write about how some of the information can be used to find water on other planets. What type of telescopes and what forms of light are being used? What are the key pieces of information they are looking form (the signature clues that water is present)?
You may need to break your paper into the following parts, though they are not required:
An explanation of the electromagnetic spectrum and the relationship between frequency/energy/wavelength
The types of telescopes that can be used to detect water and what makes them so special
The characteristic readings that scientists are looking for.

Your paper must be 5-7 pages, not including the citations page. Double spaced is fine.

A citations page is required and must contain at least two references from scientific journals (accessible through the library webpage, email if you need help)

Any format is fine (MLA, APA, etc..) just be consistent.

NO QUOTATIONS OF ANY KIND ARE ALLOWED, EVEN IF THEY ARE CITED: automatic failure for the paper

YOU MUST HAVE CITATIONS (references) WITHIN THE BODY OF YOUR TEXT (if you use a piece of information, you must tell me from which of your references you obtained it): automatic failure for the paper if these are not present

This paper must be submitted online: login into Canvas and click on the link for Turnitin.com. I will provide more instructions at a later date, though it will be pretty obvious what you need to do. A plagiarism score higher than a 30 percent will require a rewrite and a 20 percent penalty. A plagiarism score of 50 will result in automatic failure of the assignment and a report to Student Affairs for plagiarism. If any action is required on your part, I will email you and inform you. Feel free to email and ask if you think something is wrong as Turnitin.com is not perfect.

You will be required to turn in a draft that will be reviewed by at least two of your classmates. You will reciprocate by reviewing their papers as well. This draft must be emailed to your group BEFORE the midterm so that you can all discuss the paper after the midterm. More information will be provided during week 2. You must have your final draft turned in by midnight of Thursday July 1st. However, you may turn in drafts (email them to me) at any time for my review.

Aside from these key pieces, I intend to grade the papers based on quality of the content alone. There will be no points marked off for missing commas or badd Spleling. Just try to enjoy the information and geek-out a little bit. Science is supposed to be fascinating, not frightening.
