Part 1: According to the Sarin and O’Connor (2009) article, a certain style and goal structures of team leaders have a strong influence on internal team dynamics.  Based on your research within the article and textbook, as well as your own experience, what team leader management style would be most effective in leading a team in which you were a member?

Part 2: DeRue, Barnes, and Morgeson (2010) found that team leadership style effectiveness depended on the level of charisma exhibited by the leader.  Drawing from the article and the textbook, have you ever worked for a charismatic leader?  What style (coaching or directing) did that leader administer?  Was he or she effective in leading you as part of the team?

Classmate 1: Part 1: An important role is played by team leaders in the performance of any task, project, or organization in general. They lead, coordinate, and inspire members of the team to reach a shared objective. The personality traits of the team leader indicate uniqueness in personal qualities and different leaders adopt ideas depending on their style of management. Some of the types of leadership are: Authoritarian or Autocratic Leadership, Participative or Democratic Leadership, Free-rein or Laissez-faire Leadership. (Nordbäck & Espinosa, 2019)

Participative or Democratic Leadership

Here the authority is delegated by participatory or democratic leaders. It is defined by consultation and involvement of employees in drawing up programs and strategies. This helps promote decision-making engagement.

For my team leader, I really would like to see a participative leadership. Just as the term team indicates, a group of people work towards a shared goal. The team members should be included in the decision-making phase of guiding stakeholders with participative leadership capabilities that provide people with their perspectives and expertise in such a manner that the team can reach a cohesive and unified decision. It can allow team leaders to concurrently learn and evolve and ultimately become the next leader of the team.

Part 2: The ability of a person to be capable to influence, attract others is referred to as charisma. According to the concept the members of the charismatic team leaders of such organizations are very difficult to identify. The charismatic team manager encourages and helps the team leaders and makes them feel more confident in the workplace by developing their abilities, contributing to a better effort and more effective outcomes. The leader shall move with the team through positive employee evaluations and even gathers valuable ideas from their team members. I operated with a team member in a business, who is not a charismatic leader. Perhaps he addresses the mission and engages team leaders in collaboration or specifically conducts research clearly by s. He does a good job merely but he does not consider any ideas from team members. (DeRue, Barnes & Morgeson, 2010)

I collaborate under a team leader who shows participative leadership traits as he engages the different team participants with actions that make us appreciate the direction the program/project we are operating on is feeling and functioning internally. I think coaching leadership is more successful than direct leadership as it encourages team members to engage in positive, project-driven dialogue, offer feedback on a range of project-based activities or results and collect team members’ thoughts to increase the group’s imagination and interactivity

Part 1

In any organization, employees play a critical role in the success of the organization. Also, in any business projects play a crucial role and decides the future of the company. These projects are completed in teams by the team members and the one who leads the team is the team leader.  The team leader plays a critical role in an organization and project. He is the person responsible for the success or failure of the project. The success and failure of the project also depend on team collaboration and communication. Effective team communication and collaboration are key in successfully completing the project in time and within the stipulated budget. Here it is observed that the leadership style plays a critical role and it impacts the performance of the team. There are several types of leadership styles in use like autocratic style, authoritative style, democratic style, coaching style, etc (Anit, 2006).

Based on my experience I recommend that the democratic leadership style suits best to lead the team which I am a member of. This is because it allows each and every employee to take his own decisions that will give him the feeling of his own company and can work more productively. In this type of leadership style, the team leader administration will be low and the employees have a large scope for implementing creative thoughts. If something goes wrong, then the employee will learn to form his mistakes and from that experience gained will work more efficiently. This type of management style will encourage the employees to make their own decisions as opposed to depending on the TL (Anit, 2006).

Part 2

No, I haven’t worked for a charismatic leader till now. The team leader was always directing the team but never took the time to coach the team members. No, the team leader was not effective in leading the team. The team leader is the person whom the employees learn from and several things done by the TL will be imitated by the employees. Hence, keeping this in mind a team leader should be responsible as his thoughts and actions will be reflected on the team members and consequently on the project. For the project I worked for the team leader followed an authoritative style and no team members have the right to comment on his/her decision taken. In this way of management style, the creativity of the employees will not be encouraged, and the employees will always follow the instructions of the tea leaders and never get to know to make the decisions on their own. In this type of management style, we often see that the employees will be frustrated because of the decisions taken by the TL, and employees will be loaded with the work and do not have the right to against his decisions. Hence, the team leader I experienced is not charismatic as he never once gave the employees the opportunity to express their ideas or take decisions on their own. As a result, the project did not give the expected results. The TL was not effective in leading the team (Nanjundeswaraswamy, & Swamy, 2014).

       A team leader is a central pillar for intensifying the productivity of the crew. They are accountable for having control of the diverse activities of the team, influencing the outcomes. It is the potential of constructing a learning atmosphere that makes a person to be a team leader. The team-lead needs to trust every member of the team, promoting encouragement to all the employees. Such an environment enables the team-lead to build reliable decisions by using optimal approaches (DeRue et al., 2010).

       Depending on numerous theories, a few of the styles are as below.

       Participative style. In this case, team leaders involve all the associates in each decision of the ongoing tasks of the project. It would result in the promotion of collective decisions and analysis.

       Autocratic style. The commander possesses the complete control of team-activities and other managerial methods. There would be minimum involvement of the group members. The team members receive the s from the chief and fulfill the requests, as per the instructions.

       Visionary style. Having a strong desire to achieve business goals, the leader inspires the teammates to acquire the solutions faster. Visionary-style enables the improvement of organizational bonds, promoting trustworthy ideas.

       Democratic style. Along with the power, the team leader possesses the interest to contemplate the feedback of the teammates. It is suitable for the organizations opting for creative and inventive future.

       Pacesetting style. The leader aims to achieve faster outcomes by setting goals for the teammates. The primary focus would be on performance.

       The democratic, visionary, and participative style would be suitable for all types of business processes. Active participation of team leader and other members for every phase of the project enhances the vision of the firm. The autocratic style might fail in unusual situations as the decisions of the team leader might go wrong in case of interaction failures with the teammates. However, the democratic style is my choice for my team. Every style of leadership is beneficial in its way in distinct scenarios and methodologies of the business (Iqbal et al., 2015). 

Part 2

       According to the article, a charismatic leader possesses motivational skills for boosting up the team-performance (Sarin and O’Connor, 2009). A charismatic leader is accountable for supporting the team for achieving business-targets with fabulous suitability (Wang et al., 2005). I worked in an environment where our team leader was charismatic, inspiring us to achieve goals efficiently. The styles involve autocratic and visionary. It was effective in a way that we were able to accomplish the milestones. He was often accountable for all the standard decisions and directing the team in the right direction by allotting appropriate tasks.

       The workflow was clear, and there was no confusion during the execution. However, I feel that feedback consideration is also critical to avoid chances for minute mistakes. Team members can acknowledge the possibility of contemporary or unexpected issues if the democratic style is adopted. Mitigation of minor conflicts can also improve the performance of the organization to a greater extent.
