We start this week by considering how we begin to understand other people through
1) their stories and
2) the objects they create, love, or leave behind.
WATCH: the videos: “The Danger of a Single Story” and “George Carlin’s ‘Stuff'” video
EXAMINE: the objects created or treasured by people who were in Japanese Internment camps in the 1940’s. by clicking on each in the “50 Objects” webpage. Be sure to read the accompanying material for each object. (When you click on the “50 objects” module you may see a frownie face. Just click on the title of the page above the frown. It will take you there.)
REFLECT: on one of the objects from the “50 Objects” webpage. Read the homepage material, then, “Browse Objects” at the top of the homepage to find an object to discuss. Please do NOT use one of the Sogioka paintings. We will be working with these next week.
PROMPT: Briefly describe one object in your own words, and be sure to give us the title of the work and the name of the artist or owner if it’s available.
What does this object tell you about the person who made it or treasured it?
Why do you think it was so important to them?
In other words, why would they keep it, and why is it still treasured enough to be added to this site?
What more would you like to know about the people who this object belonged to?
To earn full points you need to:
1) Respond to the prompt
2) Name the artist (if their name is available) and the object
3) post a photo of the object you’re describing – you can do this by saving the photo in “Files” and then uploading it in your response.
4) In your analysis, quote something relevant from either one of the two videos you watched. When you cite a video you need to give us the name of the person speaking, the title of the video, and the time stamp for the comment you are quoting (it will look something like this: (George Carlin, “Stuff”, 2:15). Be sure to put the words you are quoting in quotation marks.
Why do you think this remark, which was not actually made about the object you’re looking at in this assignment, is relevant to our discussion?
I’m expecting at least one full, thought-out, paragraph as a response.
After you respond, go back and respond to one of your classmates as well.
Requirements: .doc file | Discussion | 1 pages, Double spaced
