  1. Pick a community near you and determine what climate change impacts they may face.
  2. What vulnerabilities they may have.

Climate change continues to be a major challenge in the current world that we live in, with its effects greatly affecting many people in the community. This has been caused by various factors such as the greenhouse effect and human beings cutting down rainforests and burning fossil fuels. Due to climate change, people in California are likely to face several climate changes impacts such as disruptions in travel, outdoor exercise, and recreational sports will become more difficult, contamination of water resources, food will be more expensive, and many people will be exposed to more allergies and other health risks.

There are other additional effects these people in the community may face, such as an increase in taxes, higher electric bills, regular blackouts, outdoor work may become unbearable, and damage in many homes. Floods, which are one of the deadliest natural disasters in the community may occur, leading to damage to people’s homes in California. Most of the people are at risk of flooding from rivers because they live in areas that usually experience flooding from storm surges during hurricanes. Global warming continues to be experienced in many parts, and it is anticipated that the waves of heat will increase in frequency, duration, and intensity, causing outdoor work to become unbearable (Diffenbaugh & Burke, 2019).

The vulnerable people in the community are facing different vulnerabilities that can be categorized into environmental, economic, social, and physical vulnerabilities. The poor people in the community have become more vulnerable to disasters since they do not have the resources to construct strong structures and put other engineering measures to protect themselves from being impacted by disasters such as floods, famine, and drought (McDowell, Ford, & Jones, 2016). These people are facing various challenges such as nonexistent social support networks, inadequate skills and educational background, unequal participation in affairs of the community, and limited access to political power and presentation. Additionally, most of these vulnerable populations heavily rely on external support; they lack awareness of development issues, their rights and obligations, and also have poor infrastructures like roads and transportation, the supply of electricity, and sanitation.

California wild wires have been one of the state’s tragedies that have killed hundreds of people, damaged property, livestock, trees, and vegetation (Herndon & Whiteside, 2018). California wildfires could be attributed to changing climate change. As the world becomes hot, warm temperatures dry out fuels that are susceptible to spark. Considering California’s climate is fire-prone, the magnitude and impact of California contribute to the tremendous devastation. Communities living in California in areas established by Cal Fire as Very High Fire Severity Zones directly suffer from the effects of climate change (Herndon & Whiteside, 2018). As temperatures rise following changes in climate changes, these communities are more susceptible to wildfires.

Although the community, in general, suffers from wildfires, specific groups of the population suffer more compared to other population groups (Wong-Parodi, 2020). This is because these groups have vulnerabilities that expose them to extreme conditions when wildfires erupt. These groups comprise the disabled, the poor, the elderly, or some combination thereof. When wildfires erupt, the disabled and the elderly cannot rush to safety or apply various precautionary members. The financially disadvantaged, whether young adults or seniors, face tremendous financial barriers that when wildfires break. They delay evacuating, suffering the loss of life, properties, and livestock (Wong-Parodi, 2020).

The government and society systematically neglect the elderly, the sick and disabled, and the poor community members in Very High Severity Zones in general. This increases susceptibility to wildfires and other climate change-related calamities. The speed at which the communities recover after the wildfires is determined by social factors such as residents’ age, income, existing ailments or disabilities, and housing situation (Wong-Parodi, 2020).
