Week 7 Discussion: Cold War and Communism
Gorbachev’s resolution to permit multi-party election and establish an office of the president for the Soviet Union started establishing a long phase of democratization that eventually destroyed Communist authority and culminated in the fall of the Soviet Union. (Duiker, 2020). Upon ascending to the presidency in January 1989, George H.W. Bush did not immediately adopt Ronald Reagan’s policies. Rather, he authorized a re-examination of corporate strategy policies to develop his unique strategy and techniques to engage with the USSR and armaments management. After the May 1990 national election, Gorbachev experienced domestic political issues with Boris Yeltsin and the pluralist party campaigning for swift industrial reformations. The Communist elite aimed to destroy Gorbachev’s reformation objective (McCauley, 2017). The failed August coup against Gorbachev confirmed the Soviet Union’s demise.
It is often considered that Soviet military expenditure rose considerably due to Ronald Reagan’s administration and ideas such as the National Security Strategy. In reality, the Soviet militia group expenditure had been increasing throughout the 70s. However, Western scholars were stuck with only inferred and informed assumptions concerning precise figures (Duiker, 2020). According to other assessments, the Soviet military expenditure fluctuated from 10% to 20% of gross domestic product. Also, it proved challenging to generate an accurate accounting, particularly inside the Soviet Union, since the military expenditure incorporated several state departments, each having its competitive objectives.
The overlapping rebellion in Hungary, Poland, and East Germany at the peak of 1956 posed a great challenge to the leadership of the USSR Communism (Duiker, 2020). The Communist Party of the USSR experienced an unpleasant exchange of words with Poland, which caused the party to withdraw its militia intervention and seek a political compromise. The crisis that occurred with Hungary was easily handled but eventually caused an impact on the collapse of the Soviet Union (McCauley, 2017). The USSR army demolished the Hungarian revolution.
