IV. Academic Course Requirements and Candidate Performances:
Course Requirements:
All assignments should be consistent with APA (7th ed.) guidelines, including appropriate title pages, headings, margins, and spacing (no abstracts are necessary). Additionally, students should use 12 point, Times New Roman font. All papers should be typed and double-spaced unless otherwise noted.
Personal Wellness Plan
Develop an individual wellness plan for yourself. Students will take several wellness assessments during class. Use your assessments to help guide your personal wellness plan. The plan will consist of two sections: (a) identify current personal and professional challenges to your wellness, and (b) create a proactive plan to engage in multiple strategies to support self-care and optimal functioning. Discuss in detail the strategies that you will implement in to appropriately navigate the challenges and maintain your wellness. Address each of the dimensions discussed in class (i.e., physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual) within your plan. Adhere to APA style for this assignment. You are not required to create an abstract; however, please use appropriate title pages, headings, citations, and references (if applicable).
Wellness App Review
Select a wellness related app of your choice to try out for 3 weeks during the semester. Ideally, the app you select will help enhance your own personal wellness and will be a resource for you to use in your future work. You will be provided with a list of suggestions; however, you are welcome to select an app not on the list. If you opt for an app that is not included on the list, please get approval from the instructor. If you have used wellness apps previously, use an app that focuses on a different aspect of wellness. When using the app, set a goal for yourself and track your use and progress with the app. After you finish using the app for 3 weeks, complete a review (3-4 pages) in which you: (a) briefly summarize the purpose/function of the app, (b) discuss how the app worked for you personally (address how well you met your goal, how often you used it; what was challenging; what did you like or not like, etc.), and (c) discuss how you can utilize the app with clients or how you will apply what you learned in your future work.
Wellness Project and Presentation
Select a wellness project that you will complete during the semester. The purpose of the project is to provide you with an opportunity to increase your knowledge of interventions that enhance your personal wellness and that you can use with clients. Ideally, the project will be a practical resource for you to use with the population with which you plan to work. You may select from the projects listed below or create your own project after consulting with the instructor. At the end of the semester you will informally share your project with other members of the class. Select one of the following options. Detailed guidelines will be provided.
1. Write a brief research paper on a specific intervention that incorporates aspects of wellness and a discussion of its use with a population.
2. Develop a wellness curriculum or workshop that you can use with a specific population. This can be for an individual, a small group, or large group psychoeducation.
3. Attend an advanced training (face to face or online) in an area related to wellness that you can use with clients. Write a reflection about your experience and how you can incorporate what you’ve learned in your clinical practice.
4. Write a newsletter (or electronic newsletter) style article highlighting a wellness intervention/interventions that can be used with clients. Include some empirical support and practical application.
5. Develop your own project (instructor approval required).
Learning Activities Reflections
Each week, students will participate in experiential learning activities (e.g., brief behavioral homework; wellness activities) based on wellness strategies learned in the class. Additionally, students will have assigned readings and videos to view. Students will also engage in virtual discussion groups with classmates based on the topic(s) of the week.
In response to the weekly activities, students will:
1. Participate in a small group discussion (virtual through Blackboard collaborate, Zoom, Google meet, etc.) with classmates based on a reflection prompt; and
2. Write a brief reflection about their learning.
Students will formulate responses to the weekly topics and their group discussions and submit responses in Blackboard. Submissions must be typed and submitted by the due date. The instructor will also post directions on Blackboard. Reflection length may vary, but the general guideline is approximately 1-page, double-spaced.
*Additional Requirement for Graduate Credit
Wellness Intervention Plan
Create a wellness intervention plan for another person. Administer wellness assessments and conduct an interview with this person. If you are currently enrolled in advanced skills, practicum, or internship you can complete this with one of your clients. Alternatively, you can work with a peer or a consenting participant outside of the university. Use at least three wellness measures that you learned about in class. Based on your interview and results of the assessments, develop a brief case conceptualization (i.e., conceptualize the client from one of the perspectives discussed in class and intervention plan for the person (template will be provided). The treatment plan should include goals, objectives, and interventions. Use an assumed name for the client. Adhere to APA style for this assignment.
