ENG COMP Annotated Bibliography

You will be turning in an Annotated Bibliography in preparation for Essay 3. Once your read the assignment for Essay 3, you will have a better idea of the sorts of topics you will need to consider for your essay. The Rogerian essay format is not your typical argument, so it is critical that you pick a topic about which you can see two sides; don’t chose a topic about which you already have a strong bias toward one side.

The five sources that you use for your Annotated Bibliography will be the sources that you will most likely be using for your research essay. Before you turn in your Annotated Bibliography you should have already received permission from me regarding your topic choice.

Instructions for your Annotated Bibliography:

List all 5 of your sources for your research essay in alphabetical with the following information:

1. each source is listed in MLA citation format, (Be sure to use Purdue OWL or citation tools to help you with proper MLA formatting. Make sure you use hanging indentation formatting for each citation.)

2. followed by an abstract (brief summary) of the source which includes what type of source you are listing, such as ebook, encyclopedic article, film, book, academic article, etc, and what sorts of information you can find in this source,

3. and a short reflection about the significance of the article and its relevance for your research project. The reflection basically identifies how you will use the information from this source in your essay.

4. The abstract and reflection start on the next line after the citation, as seen in the example below.

(The abstract and reflection do not need to extend beyond a few sentences for each entry.)

I am including a sample citation for the student annotated bibliography as an example for you. Remember you will need to include 5 sources for this assignment. Here are a few examples to help with formatting (Remember that these examples have longer abstracts and reflections than you need for this assignment):

Annotated Bibliography for Shamanism

Chi, Zhen, et al. Popular Religion And Shamanism. Leiden: Brill, 2011. eBook Collection

(EBSCOhost). Web. 27 Oct. 2014.

This e-book from Trident Tech’s database focuses on the basic traditions and rituals of shamanism,

but it also specifically zooms in on certain types and branches of shamanism. This book will help me

to compare certain types of shamanism and different types of practices within the religion throughout

the research paper.Rogerian Research Essay

Now we are going to push our ideas of truth a bit further. Can we look at information objectively, being careful to maintain neutrality, to help ourselves and perhaps our readers to see a more universal truth than seems possible in the polarized reality of our current world?

When most of us think of argument, we think about winners of arguments and losers of arguments. Arguments can be strong and forceful. An Aristotelian or classical argument is a strong, a “this is my assertion and here’s why I am right” kind of argument. But that kind of argument isn’t going to work in all situations. When your audience is a really difficult one in the sense that you know your audience isn’t going to completely agree with one side or the other of the issue, it can be a good idea to try to find a middle ground.

Based on the work of psychologist Carl Rogers , a Rogerian argument focuses on finding a middle ground between the two sides and the audience. This type of argument can be extremely persuasive and can help you, as a writer, understand your own biases and how you might work to find common ground with others.

This assignment provides the opportunity for you to research and write about a controversial topic. For this assignment, you will be using the Rogerian Argument Format to respond to an issue that can be perceived to have at least two sides. Please study the Rogerian Format closely, noticing how the format differs from the formats we have been using previously for this class. For this essay, you will use the Points of View Reference and Opposing Viewpoints in Context databases from Trident Technical College’s Library Resources to find your topic and to research support this essay. To avoid too much repetition of topics, please confirm approval of your topic with me before you begin your research.

There is a link to the Library Resources at the top of your TTC home page. Once in the Library Resources page, go to Databases by Subject. Choose the Points of View Reference or Opposing Viewpoints in Context database to begin exploring for a topic that interests you. The Points of View Reference is helpful in that it lets your find the two opposing sides of a topic more clearly than the Opposing Viewpoints in Context database, but both databases have good information. When you find a topic, send me an email or tell me before class to get approval for your topic. You can access the databases off campus by using your D2L login. You will also need your Student ID Number to access some information. You can find your ID number on your Navigate profile.

Here is a summary of the basic strategy for a Rogerian argument:

  1. In your essay, first, introduce the problem.
  2. Present one side of the issue. This may take more than one paragraph. Support this side without bias.
  3. Next, you should carefully present the other side of the issue in a way that does not dismiss the other side. This may also take more than one paragraph.
  4. You should then work to bring the two sides together. Your thesis will appear in this section of the essay. Help your audience see the benefits of the middle ground. Make your proposal for the middle ground here, and be sure to use an even, respectful tone. This should be a key focus of your essay and may take more than one paragraph.
  5. Finally, in your conclusion, remind your audience of the balanced perspective you have presented and make it clear how both sides benefit when they meet in the middle.

While your thesis sentence will appear later in the essay than our previous essays, this placement does not diminish the necessity of a clear thesis statement and topic sentences for this essay.

RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must have at least five research sources for your essay. However, you may find that you will need even more. One of these sources will be the original article to which you are responding. Your sources may include books, ebooks, magazines, journals, or films, but try not to rely completely on one type of source.
  • Use the Opposing Viewpoints in Context database on the TTC Library’s database site to find most or all of your sources.
  • You must quote or paraphrase from all five of your research sources in the essay. Include in-text citations for all information within your essay that is not common knowledge. You will follow the MLA format for citing these sources within the text. (MLA formatting information starts on pg. 220 of your Little, Brown, Essential Handbook.
  • Your essay must also have a Works Cited page that lists the sources used in your essay. It will be written according to the MLA format. It does not count toward the required length of the essay.
  • Please do not use more than 20% quotes in relation to your own ideas, paraphrased material, and summarized material. Remember that most of the essay’s information will come from researched information, not from your own ideas.
  • The Little Seagull Handbook can be an essential resource as you research your topic and write your essay. Research Chapter (90-118) MLA Format (119-169). Finally, a sample research essay (160-169) provides an example to follow. It provides an example of a Works Cited page, and it shows how sources are cited in the body of the essay.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

– Your essay must be at least 1,200 words in length. The Works Cited page does not count in this total.

– Use the Rogerian Argument Format to structure your essay.

– This essay must be typed double-spaces, have a title, and appropriate, MLA heading the the left-hand corner.

– The title, centered on the top line of your essay, must reflect your essay and not the title of the reading. Do not put your title in quotation marks or underline it. Keep your title in the same font style and size as the rest of the essay.

– Make sure you have a clear, well-developed thesis statement. While the thesis usually is placed as the last sentence of your introductory paragraph, for this essay, your thesis is not presented until the fourth section, the middle ground section, of the essay. Thesis Statements and Topic Sentences

– Make sure that you have topic sentences at the beginning of each body paragraph. Paragraph Structure and Topic Sentences

– Use primarily third person, for this essay. Only use first person, if you have a very good reason, and please do not use second person, at all.

– You are required to use at least 2 quotations to support your argument. Use MLA-style parenthetical citations: ex. (Voltaire 618) and if you have quotations, you need a works cited page. (see example below) TTC English Dept. Video Presentations: “Using Quotations in Your Essays”

– Leave yourself time to explore your topic and complete your essay

– Your essay must be submitted to the Assignments Folder (which can be found under the Course Work tab). You are responsible for making sure that your essay has been submitted and can be read by the D2L Assignments Folder.

– Plagiarism has been a problem with this assignment. If you do not understand what plagiarism is (Avoiding Plagiarism), please ask, because plagiarism of any kind will result in a failing grade. Blatant plagiarism will earn you a zero for the essay.
