Introduction and Background: Provide the background of your topic. What are the issues and problems? What do experts say about the topic? Why is the topic important-what’s at stake? This is a good place to incorporate A2, the topic proposal. Introduce the topic by providing some background for your audience who may not be familiar with the topic. Provide a contextual history of the issue, including support, if relevant from a critical article. Cite some examples of the issue. Convince the audience that the topic is important and worthwhile. Next, provide a more specific and detailed discussion introducing your writer’s position.
Writer’s Position and Development: After having introduced the topic, you can now logically state your position on the issue and provide your thesis or claim to help lead the audience toward your next step, which is to develop your claim into subcategories in the body of the paper. You state your position and thesis on the issue. Explain what your claim is, what the key issues are, and in what they will be treated.
Body: The body is the main part of your paper where you have broken down the issues into categories. For a paper this length, you will probably have 3 main points. Within each point, provide enough evidence and support from critical articles and reliable sources, and from your own original analysis to convince the reader that your claim is valid. Beware of fallacies (see the list of fallacies in Lesson 4). Use your own outline from A2 for this section. You offer detailed support for the claim, using both logical reasoning and factual evidence. Support will be two-fold: a) critical support from academic articles and b) sufficient detailed analysis/examples (from media, or the appropriate field of your topic study).
Counter-Argument: Because your topic is debatable, there will always be alternative perspectives. Discuss one or two of these (include a critical article from an opposing point of view) so that you can show the reader that you have come to your conclusion in a carefully argued, logical and ethical manner. You consider and respond to at least one opposing claim.
Visual Text: Include at least two examples of a visual text: chart, graph, map, drawing or photograph/image
Conclusion: Provide a comprehensive conclusion, perhaps even a proposal for change.
You must explain your ideas in detail in to make a clear and complete argument. For this assignment, you’ll also need to include specific examples (quotes) from ALL sources to support your analysis. Specific examples should be taken from media: television shows, films, internet shows, media news, streaming shows, etc, or from the appropriate field of your topic.
