Step One

Read the module chapter first so you’ll be able to utilize the background reading to inform your analysis (it is NOT merely a random opinion I’m looking for here, but a historically contextualized response). Watch/Read the lecture slides “Middle to Upper Paleo” in the previous Canvas Page including the embedded and linked videos on the Lascaux Caves and the slide on “Birdman.”

Step Two (by Monday)

Reflect- Reply to ONE of the below topics in a full paragraph response. (Specify which question. You don’t have to answer all sub-prompts, as long as your response is a paragraph). For either question, connect what you saw to what you learned about Paleolithic art from either the chapter reading or from the lecture slides. (This is good practice to prepare you for your first “mini essay” coming up, which always requires a “synthesis” component, connecting different parts of the module). 
1. The Cave as a whole- Points to consider:

· What sensations did you experience in your virtual tour of the cave? Based on your perceptions (and your background knowledge from the reading), what do you think was the purpose of the cave?
· Do you respond to this more as archaeological evidence for the Paleolithic or from a perspective of cultural/artistic appreciation?
2. Birdman: the only human figure portrayed in the cave and located in the most inaccessible (secret?) part of the cave. Note that we don’t know if the animal was painted at the same time, or if they were completed separately. Points to consider:

· What is a possible narrative story?
· What might be the messages?
· Differences in portrayal between the human and the animals?

Optional:  (By Tuesday)

· “Muddy Points”: do you have any questions you’re having trouble with from the learning objectives? This is your chance to get pre-quiz clarification from either peers or from me! Be sure to come back and read/reply to the answers you get (extra points for more than the minimum replies!) 
· Curiosity Questions- anything you want to ask about just because you’re interested? Ask away, just like you would in class! Be sure to come back and read/reply to the answers you get (extra points for more than the minimum replies!) 
· Relevant memes? (Please review guidelines from the first board).

Step Three- (By Tuesday)

Respond- write a reply to at least TWO other people’s (one can be to me). OPTIONS:
· Answer someone’s “muddy question” and help them with the learning objective
· Respond to someone who answered the other prompt than the one you chose
Don’t just “post and ghost”! People may ask you specific questions, or in other ways engage in dialogue with you that requires a reply! There’s nothing worse than taking the time to answer someone’s question on a board, but they never check back to see the answer!
