WebQuest (Revised)
WebQuest (Revised)
1. Use your device/computer with internet connection.
2. Use the handout, “How to navigate to Japanese sites” and find a number of relevant internet sites written in
Japanese that satisfy the category assigned by the instructor. Refer to the remaining pages of this handout for
specific requirements of this assignment.
3. Choose a total of 2 internet sites per category and print at least the first page of each site. Each
page must have the internet address (www…) printed on it. You DO NOT have to print this time.
4. By using rikai.com, as described in “How to navigate to Japanese sites,” try your best at grasping the
main content of each of 2 sites and write up a brief summary (in English, typed, a
half-page, double-spaced). If the site contains mainly image files and lacks text information, you
may find difficulty to gather much information about the site. If so, abandon that site and find
other sites that can be handled more easily.
5. Write up a brief critique of each of 2 sites (in English, typed, a half-page, double-spaced). Include
why each site was useful for you, what new information you acquired, and what new thoughts or
interest it provoked.
6. From each of 2 sites that you worked on, list 5 new Japanese words that you came across and write
the definition (in English) .
7. Finally, find at least 5 links from each of 2 sites, go to each link, and record the name of the site
(handwritten or typed) and the site address (www…) (typed). You may want to avoid those sites
such as personal blogs as they may not include too many links.
8.
9. In to ensure that you utilize the WL Lab for this assignment, you must log into your
account on the Canvas site and fill in required information by the
due date. You will not receive credit for your work otherwise.
10. Remember that this is a lab activity for this class and you may need more than a week’s worth of lab
time to complete this assignment. Plan ahead and seek assistance from the Japanese instructor
whenever you need help.

Summary:
This site introduces the birth of modern department stores in Japan. Daimaru
department store was founded in 1717 by Hikoemon Shimomura in Hushimi, Kyoto.
The store originally started its business as a kimono store called Dai Monji-ya in Kyoto
and later added branches in Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo. The site also introduces other
department stores such as Matsuzaka-ya, Takashima-ya, Sogo, Matsu-ya, Isetan, and
Mitsukoshi. Among them Mitsukoshi’s history is “momentous” as they pioneered in
hiring female clerks, using automobiles in delivery, decorating the store with huge
illuminations, and opening a restaurant within the store.
Critique:
This site gives concise yet useful information on the history of a number of major
department stores in Japan most of which are still in business today. The photos used
in the site provide information as to the architectural styles of the stores and clothing styles
of people at the time. It even shows a picture of the very first automobile of Japan
and a scene from a fashion show at the time. One of the links from this page led me to
“the very first bank of Japan,” where the history of Mitui Bank is summarized with an
array of relevant photos from each historic moment.

Adding a space and http may yield better results.
2. Open rikai.com and select Japanese to English
on the top right corner.
3. Copy and paste the site address you found on
http://www.google.co.jp into a square box
in rikai.com and press GO!
4. Now you can navigate through the Japanese page by moving
the mouse cursor over any Japanese word and find the
reading and definition of words and phrases in the sentence.
