Modern Design History Assignment

The theme is Design and Social Change. How have designed objects announced, documented, or even caused changes to modern societies (1750-today)? Curate an exhibition that explores this idea.

For the exam, you will curate a virtual exhibition
of eight objects from the Key Designs listed on the lecture outlines.

You
will organize your selected designs to convey the exhibition theme and write an
introduction, a short essay for each design exhibited, and a conclusion. (You
can think of these as the wall panels and extended object labels that you would
see in an actual exhibition.)

There
are three aspects to your exhibition. One is to select the most relevant designs
and to persuasively describe the key features and historical context of each in
relation to the theme. Second, your discussion of the individual designs must
demonstrate the information and knowledge that you have learned in this course.
Third, the designs must be sequenced and include transitions to develop the
theme overall.

You may not select more than one key design
from a lecture outline (i.e., you will leave out designs from three lectures).

Introduction and conclusion are maximum 150
words; object essays are maximum 250 words.

·
You may create exhibition sub-themes. If you
use sub-themes, you must also include an introduction for each sub-theme.

·
You may use only the course materials
(lectures + assigned readings). Although this is an open text and open notes
exam, your answers must be written by
you alone and in your own words. You must support your statements with
paraphrases and in-text citations in MLA format from the lectures and readings.
This is not a research assignment; also,
any group-written response or plagiarism will result in a grade of zero.

You must include images of the designs with
their captions with each object essay (e.g., designer, title, date).
