Module 8 Discussion

By now, students have had an opportunity to complete the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to explore areas of potential implicit bias.  Implicit bias is largely the result of societal and cultural influences that are perpetuated by the media through music, television, movies and advertising.
Based on what you have learned about stereotypes and bias, for your initial discussion post, you should identify a media source that reinforces negative stereotypes about a sub-population you are interested in. You might choose an image, a photo, a short movie clip, a commercial or advertisement, or a YouTube video.
Please be sure to attach the image/photo or include a link to the movie clip, commercial, or YouTube video in your discussion post and provide a brief explanation of why you believe the source reinforces negative stereotypes or bias.
Please comment on the discussion posts of your peers. For your discussion posts to your peers, you many want to consider how might the stereotype or bias portrayed could lead to disparities in public health and/or health care services.
Please Note: If you choose a movie clip, commercial, or YouTube video, it would be wise to select content that is less than 1 minute so that it is easy for peers to view.

Module 8 Activity

Please respond briefly (3-5 paragraphs) to all three of the following prompts.

· Describe “microaggressions” using your own words/ideas (based on Sue article).
· Discuss what contemporary racism is/looks like (based on the film that you viewed).
· Describe one incident from your personal experience (something you either experienced or witnessed directly) that you believe demonstrates the existence of microaggression or contemporary racism.
