sources are required to be cited in correct APA format with sources listed on the Reference
Page. Content from sources is required to be paraphrased and cited. Only one short direct
quote is accepted in paper.

Research the Online Keiser Library for scholarly nursing journal articles.
Additional sources can be additional ANA Essentials textbooks, additional scholarly nursing

Assignment Guidelines:

For this assignment, you will create an APA format paper on the use of Health Information
Technology (HIT) and the Internet to disseminate health information and explore educational
initiatives, social media in health care, and to support patient safety.

Nursing Informatics includes the exploration of advances being made in Health Information
Technology (HIT) and patient safety. The Joint Commission plays an integral role in a Systems
Approach to Safety. The Joint Commission became involved in 2008 with the Sentinel Event
Alert on ‘Safely Implementing Health Information and Converging Technologies.’ This includes
Health Technology related hazards, close calls, and sentinel events. This resulted in the Joint
Commission’s release of Sentinel Event’s alert on safe use of HIT including social and
technological factors having an impact on safe use. This also focused on safety culture,
process improvement, and leadership.

In your paper, answer each of the following six questions comprehensively. Provide thorough,
well-detailed cited information for each question. Incorporate APA cited paraphrases from
your sources to support your information.

1. Discuss how Health Information Technology (HIT) improves the quality of patient care,
patient safety, and reduces sentinel events.

2. Identify and discuss the issues and patient safety risks involved in using HIT and how nurses
can prevent these risks.

3. Discuss strategies you currently implement in your nursing practice using HIT to provide
safe, high-quality care for improved patient outcome. Discuss what you might do differently

5. Apply the nursing informatics principles of privacy, confidentiality, information-and-data
privacy, and information security to electronic health records (EHRs) and social networking.

6. Explain how what you have learned from this assignment will influence and improve your
nursing practice. Include a minimum of five specific strategies you will implement in your
practice and explain.
