You can choose any of these questions

1. Describe how representations of masculinities and/or femininities intersect with markers of ethnicity in a particular medium (eg. Kids tv, magazines, prime time television, daytime, etc). Is inclusion of under-represented identities enough to redress inequality and power in Australian culture?

2. Examine the construction of gendered norms and behaviours regarding sexual relationships in a particular site (eg. Popular film, sex education in high school, self-help books, etc). How well do the markers of gender and sexuality enable young people to makes sense of themselves and navigate healthy personal and social relationships? (consider diversity of different identities to answer the question)

3. How have representations of LGBTIQ folk on television changed in the last thirty to forty years? How have such representations challenged or reinforced conventional views regarding gender and sexuality? NOTE: in addition to finding sources from previous decades, above all you will need to find material that relates to the last three years to bring the assignment up to date. You can focus on one identity if you prefer (eg. lesbians, gay men, trans folk, intersex, asexual)

Relationships, sex and reproductive choices

4. Compare ‘second wave’ feminist critiques of and ‘gay liberationist’/queer resistance to marriage to the recent legalisation of same-sex marriage. What conclusions do you draw regarding marriage as an institution?

5. Examine changing debates regarding abortion OR sexual assault from ‘second wave’ feminist struggles to the present day.

6. Compare how representations of reproduction in popular culture OR government policy impact on different types of people (due to difference in race, class, sexuality, gender diversity or disability) forming bonds of kinship and family.

Theorising gender, sexuality and diversity

7. Discuss the extent to which you agree (or not) with de Beauvoir’s statement, “one is not born a woman, but becomes one” (you may focus on men, women or both sexes in answering this question; you can also tackle the question from a genderqueer, trans or non-binary perspective; don’t forget to name what you are focusing on in the beginning of your question). You will need to track key concepts of essentialism and social construction to answer this question.

8. Assess the claim that feminism has largely been a movement for white heterosexual women by focussing on a particular campaign (eg. #metoo) or issue (eg. equal pay, family leave, glass ceiling)

9. Define intersectionality and outline how such an approach can inform a current political debate or issue of your choice (eg. workplace relations, discrimination, organising rallies or events, writing policy, conducting campaigns such as #metoo or eradicating domestic violence – discuss with tutor).

Labour, love and leisure

10. How do mainstream concepts of gender and the family impact on the division of labour and/or one’s life chances for different types of identities? (eg. you can choose one or more of following: race, gender identity, sexuality and disability)

Sport

11. Examine how issues of inequality regarding gender, sexuality or ethnicity are reinforced and/or contested in a specific sport (you can choose to focus on one marker of identity, or more than one).

12. Focus on a controversy concerning a particular sports celebrity and assess how well the profession to which they belong have dealt with issues relating to one or more of the following identity categories: race, gender, sexuality or disability.

Sex Work/industry

13. Compare competing perspectives on sex work and outline legislative regulations regarding the industry in Victoria. What issues emerge as the most important for the status of sex workers from your research?

14. Examine debates or the ‘sex wars’ regarding pornography. What arguments are more convincing and why?

Violence

15. Define domestic and family violence and outline how issues may differ on the basis of one or more of the following identity categories: race, gender, sexuality and disability.

16. What options may be explored to deal with gendered violence that are not dependent on criminalisation and incarceration?
