This is your final assignment in this course. This will need to be submitted correctly and on time (no later than 11:59 p.m. PT on Friday, 7/31).
PROMPT: Support for populist, ethnically-based nationalism has risen throughout the West (in Europe and in the United States). The success of political leaders such as Matteo Salvini (https://www.npr.org/2019/05/22/725023096/italys-matteo-salvini-hopes-to-lead-nationalist-wave-in- upcoming-european-electi) , Nigel Farage (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Nigel-Farage) , Donald Trump, and Marine Le Pen (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Marine-Le-Pen) (who explicitly support anti-immigration policies,** for example) are indicative of this transformation. Based upon what you have learned in this class, put Western support for such messages, policies, and leaders into historical context. You will need to show breadth and depth here, and at least one of your primary sources and part of your overall analysis must stem from the last few textbook chapters (28/29).
Some topics to consider might be (you do not have to stick to these–these are guiding topics to give you some ideas):
The Atlantic System and the rise of race-based enslavement. The Era of New Imperialism. The Experiences of WWI, WWII, and the Holocaust. Post-WWII decolonization and the role of the Cold War in destabilizing developing nations. The era of globalism and population migration.
**Please note: The example provided in the question–anti-immigration–is just that–an example of how these policies play out. This essay should not focus exclusively on immigration or anti- immigration.
FORMAT AND OVERALL REQUIREMENTS:
This must be in essay form. You will need a beginning, middle, and end–an introduction that outlines a specific argument, a middle (multiple body paragraphs), and a conclusion. I must be able to clearly follow your argument, so the organization and the writing will matter.
It should be approximately 4 to 5 pages in length (double spaced, 12-pt normal (not bold) type size in Times New Roman font.

This must be uploaded as a MS Word document or PDF to this assignment page (just like the written responses/written test responses you’ve submitted throughout the session). All essays will route through Turnitin. This is not an essay question that lends itself well to last-minute attempts to pull something together.
I strongly recommend that you structure your time so that you can revise and edit. Kindly proofread.
SOURCE USE/SOURCE REQUIREMENTS:
For full credit, you must effectively and specifically utilize at least four primary sources from different/various time periods (see prompt). For full credit, you must effectively and specifically utilize at least two secondary sources (not including the links provided above to the various politicians/leaders, which you are also welcome to use). Do not plagiarize, and do not use any outside sources, as this will result in an automatic zero. You are welcome to use any resource/source provided within the History 2 course or within the Launchpad/source reader. Please cite source use as instructed and required throughout the course. I am not going to have time to research what source you might have meant in an unclear citation. If it’s not cited as instructed/required, you will not earn credit for it. (A common example of this is when a student cites the bibliographic information at the end of a primary source document in the reader.) You DO need a full bibliography in MLA format.
Please review the Intro Module PowerPoint on this. Each primary source requires its own entry. This is covered in that resource, so please review it. No bibliography will result in an automatic 4-point deduction, and an incomplete one will incur a deduction based on the issues at hand. Your bibliography shows where YOU accessed the source. You do not need to use the bibliographic info at the end of the sources in the reader.
EXAMPLES OF POSSIBLE PRIMARY SOURCES TO CONSIDER–YOU SHOULD NOT STICK ONLY TO THIS LIST (AND YOU SHOULD AVOID RE-USING WORK YOU ALREADY SUBMITTED); THIS IS JUST A STARTING POINT! (REMEMBER, I AM LOOKING FOR BREADTH AND DEPTH, SO CONSISTENTLY REPEATING CHUNKS OF WHAT WE ALREADY FOCUSED ON IN TDS, ETC., MAY NOT EARN AS MANY POINTS):
Bartolomé de Las Casas, In Defense of the Indians Olaudah Equino, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equino Written by Himself The Chronicle of Abd al-Rahman al-Jabarti Jules Ferry, Speech before the French National Assembly Ndansi Kumalo, His Story National Security Council, Paper Number 68
