Types of death states

Those students who have taken AS101OC with me previously will recognize this LA format. For each of the two Learning Activities in this course (LA3 and LA4) there is a choice between two LAs the group members must select. This assignment (LA3) is your first collaborative group activity option for AS102. Your first step as a group is to decide which of two alternatives to choose (LA3-A or LA3-B). Thus, each member of the Group must read the two LA3 descriptions and help decide on the final choice. The second step is to select a summarizer. Each Group will have three or four students. If you are in a Group of three then two of you will have an opportunity to summarize one of the two Learning Activities. You may select your summarizer alphabetically according to last name or perhaps you will have a volunteer. Once you have your summarizer identified and LA option selected begin by reading the instructions for this assignment carefully, working together to assign each person a role, coming together on the discussion board (or any other suitable electronic meeting place) to offer support and to collaborate, and finally for the summarizer to synthesize the group work and compile the assignment and to submit it in the appropriate dropbox. You MUST give the summarizer sufficient time to put the whole submission together. Therefore, please establish a timetable for work completed that gives the summarizer at least 24 hours to complete the LA. If you submit your portion without giving the summarizer sufficient time to complete the work you will be assigned a lesser grade. An additional task of the summarizer is to inform me at the end of the submission who worked on the LA and how much each person contributed to the work. Please put all participating group members’ names on the front of the LA. **All assignments must be submitted in .doc or .rtf format so that they can be checked for plagiarism. Failure to do this will result in an automatic grade one point reduction and a zero overall if the submission is not corrected after being informed of the improper format.** Title your file LA1_lastname_student number. For example: LA1_McDonald_123456789.doc and don’t forget to include the names of all of your group members in the submission! Once you have your summarizer identified and LA option chosen begin by reading the instructions for the chosen assignment carefully once more and, working together, assign each person a role, coming together on the discussion board to offer support and to collaborate, and finally for the summarizer to synthesize the group discussion and compile a one page summary to submit in the appropriate drop box. For further instructions please check the course assessment descriptions in the syllabus. LA3-B In Module 6 you learned about the life cycles of stars of various masses. The birth and adult life of all stars is fairly mundane and uneventful compared to their deaths. As you know White dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes represent the final (death) state of stars, depending on the star’s initial mass. This assignment requires you, as a group, to characterize each of these “death” stars to a friend who has not studied astronomy, as you have? Write a paragraph (at least 650 words for each death star) describing each of the three for your friend. For each one you will need to describe (using a lay person’s language) the death phase, the characteristics of the final result and anything else you think interesting or important. Finally, you need to discuss any similarities and/or differences among the three types of death states. Since there are three different objects to write about perhaps three members of the group could be responsible for researching and writing about one object each and the summarizer could write about the similarities/differences aspect as well as pulling the document together into a final shape. However, that’s merely a suggestion; you may decide to divide up the work differently. This assignment is worth 15% of your final grade. you only need to write about the White dwarfs for 650 words!!!
